The Ministry of Education and Culture oversees the regulation of pre-primary, primary, secondary, and higher education in Cyprus. It also addresses the enrollment of foreign students in Cypriot institutions. European residents of Cyprus have the right to access public school education, while private primary, secondary, and higher education institutions complement the publicly funded system and are open to foreign nationals residing in Cyprus.

While Greek is the predominant language of instruction, private schools primarily use English. State schools provide intensive Greek language classes to students who do not speak the language, reflecting Cyprus's EU membership and welcoming stance towards expatriates. Uniforms are mandatory in all Cyprus schools, with private schools enforcing stricter uniform regulations compared to public schools.

Pre-primary education is compulsory before entering primary school, with enrollment permitted from as young as three years old. Primary education is mandatory for children between the ages of six and twelve. Secondary education comprises lower secondary, upper secondary, and technical and vocational divisions. Gymnasio, a three-year program, is mandatory for students aged 12 to 15.

School days typically run from 7:30 to 8:00 hours, concluding between 13:15 and 14:00, consisting of seven 40-minute lessons with three 40-minute breaks for students.

The academic year comprises three terms, spanning from early September to early June. The first term concludes before Christmas, the second extends from after January 6 to Holy Week, and the third begins a week after Easter and ends in early June. Christmas and Easter entail two-week breaks, with summer vacation starting in June and ending in September.
